A New Enemy

When A New Day Begins...

Another Fight Awakens...

Chapter 4 - Surprises

"Hello? Helloooo?" Jessica waved her arms in front of me. She tried to make me blink, but I didn't even flinch one bit. This was getting annoying. "Bellaaaaaaa.......answer my question already!! Come on...please...." she couldn't sit still. She kept walking in front of me and sometimes moving me. "THAT'S IT! BELLA ANSWER ME ALREADY!! I CAN'T STAND THIS! EVERYONE IS FRICKIN' BUGGING ME ABOUT IT, AND YOU THE ONLY FRICKIN' PERSON THAT KNOWS! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THE CULLENS? ITS BEEN A MONTH NOW AND THEY HAVEN'T CAME BACK! PLUS THERE ARE 3 NEW FRICKIN' STUDENTS.WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO THEM?!"

I looked up at her and sighed. I didn't want to put up with this.

"AAGGGGHHH!!!!" she threw her hands in the air and finally giving up, she sat down next to me.

Class started and Jessica sat impatiently next to me, squirming in her chair as if she was itchy. Itchy to get the answers out of me. I gave up too, she might as well tell everyone the truth rather than spreading rumors. "Jessica," she looked at me. He eyes glistened with pure interest.

"Yeah?" she grinned wide, happy to have won me over, "please, please, please give the answer to my question....please, oh please...." she whispered to herself. Twining her fingers together as if to beg me.

"Fine," I sighed, "to tell you the truth, they...umm...they...didn't go on vacation..." I paused to see if what I said triggered anything.

Jessica did nothing, she just kept staring at me with all of her interest, but that didn't do anything. Nothing to trigger a big squeal or her saying 'I KNEW IT!' She just stared, then her lips parted, "But? Come on Bella, do you really think I could just tell everyone they didn't go to vacation without any questions flooding me? Don't leave me hanging."

"Ok," I looked down, not looking at her. "They were sent somewhere to go deal with a problem. Probably a medical problem, since Carlisle mentioned something about it. Edward said that they were going to stay there with Carlisle for a while. That's all I know." I didn't look up, afraid she'll see my eyes and accuse me of lying. It's not like I lied, I just didn't tell her the whole truth.

"Hmmm......sounds reasonable, I could probably pass it." she tapped her chin with her finger, thinking of what to say at lunch probably.

Riiiiinnnnnggg

Everyone shuffled out of their seats and to 5th period. After that it was lunch. "Oh Bella, I'll walk with you to lunch. I need a back-up for something. I'll talk to you later, see you at lunch." She waved good bye as everyone passed me. Whoo-hoo. Lunch was next. Can't wait.

---------

"Hey Bella!" Angela looked up from her food and greeted me and Jessica with a big smile.

"Hey..." I smiled back at her weakly. I couldn't process the same enthusiasm as her. I took a seat next to Angela, since I was most comfortable around her. The conversations around the table deceased to a stop, as Jessica, like she was in charge, raised her hand to stop the talking.

"Same as yesterday, but Bella said it wasn't more of a vacation, more like they were gone for medical purposes..." she looked towards me. Trying to see if what she said was an okay-version of my long explanation.

I nodded towards her. Then someone spoke up at the end of the table, "What do you mean medical purposes? Are they sick of Forks? If so, good riddance to the Cullens." I turned to see who it was. He smiled impishly as I looked at him. It was Josh. Typical Josh. Everyone stared at me, then at Jessica, then back at me. I didn't know what to say.

I was happy when Jessica spoke up, "No, they left 'cause Carlisle was needed somewhere. All of the Cullens came though."

Everyone was silent. No one knew what to say. Then Lauren spoke, "Wait. Why the hell are we talking about the Cullens? Since when did we care about them? Seems to me that you guys miss them. I think it's better now that they are gone."

Right after she said that everyone had stared at her, even me. "Why do we care?" Jessica mocked her, "'Cause if the frickin' Cullens aren't here, these new kids are the new ones taking over the school. Do you even know a single one of them?" Jessica leaned to her right to show Lauren a better view of the 7 people in the table. "They seem more indifferent than the Cullens. No one cares about them. With the Cullens, ever since Bella has been around them, people start to feel at ease near them. Remember what happened in freshman year?"

Lauren shuddered at the thought. I don't know what happened 2 years ago, since I arrived at sophomore year.

No one spoke after that. Maybe an occasional whisper at someone, but that was about it. They didn't want to continue the conversation leading to freshman year.

Josh broke the silence, "What happened freshman year?"

Oh yeah, he wasn't here during freshman year too. I leaned in curious. I wanted to know what happened too.

Jessica pursed her lips. "Hmmmm......well.......actually......' her voice trailed off to a whisper.

I leaned in closer, afraid she will lower her voice more.

"......they...........hmmm......how should I put this? My memory is vague -- which is actually kinda weird. I always remember everything. hmmmm....."

Everyone had pretty much leaned towards Jessica, wondering what she was thinking. Lauren leaned away. She did not want to hear this. Even Mike, Angela, Ben and Eric were interested. Weren't they here during freshman year?

"Hmmmm......nah!" Jessica leaned back. Everyone had their jaws to the ground. They all knew that a good story was in the making and Jessica let it past! How is that possible?

"COME ON!" Mike slammed his hands on the table, "WHAT HAPPENED?!"

I stared towards Mike, "Weren't you there in freshman year?"

"Yeah, but I didn't see anything like that happen. I transferred near the end of freshman year."

"Me too," Angela spoke up looking at me. "So did Ben, and Eric. We transferred in almost the middle of freshman year."

"Oh okay, then what happened? Jess?" I turned my head to face her. I needed to know.

"I don't want to say." she crossed her arms across her chest.

"Yeah, as if you remember!" Lauren, leaned in towards her, giving her a glare.

"Of course I remember." Jessica gladly returned the glare.

"No one remembers what happened that day!"

"I DO!" Jessica pointed her finger towards herself.

"As if! No one knew what happened that day. Not even the teachers. The only thing we know is that we all ended up in school during lunch. The Cullens and their 'posse' wasn't there either. All of them left. Then the next day they come back as if nothing happened. Something did happen, and that's why everyone tends to avoid them. Don't tell me that everyone feels at ease near them, they look at us as if we are FOOD!"

 RRRRRIIIINNNNNGGGGG!

No one moved. Not even Lauren. Jessica and her were having an inner battle between each other. Contacting and attacking each other with their eyes.

I was going to be really late. I stood and before I realized it, I was the only one left standing up. I strided to my 6th period class.

------------

I headed towards my truck. I wanted to be quick to get out of here. After all that drama and the fuss about freshman year, I don't want to be caught up into something else.

As I got closer, I saw one of the new students in their car, sitting in the drivers seat. I didn't know what type of car it was, but it was dark blue in color. When I passed by, she smiled at me. Her eyes sparkling and genuine. I didn't know how to react, I smiled back weakly at her. Not knowing what to do. I got in my car and put it in reverse. The roar of my engine surprised some people, still not used to the sound of it. I drove out of the school and onto the road. Anxious to get home.

------------

I parked my car in the road, and almost ran to the front door. I checked to see if Charlie was home. His car wasn't in the driveway, but the porch light was open. I opened the front door and walked in the pitch darkness. I fumbled around, looking for the lights. When I turned on the lights, something I never expected jumped at me....
